Happy Halloween everybody!

This week we went on our school sponsored walk on Thursday when the rain held off. We walked all the way around the grounds of Teagasc and caught a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes. Thanks to everyone who sponsored a child for the walk, which helped to raise much-needed funds for our school.

With Halloween approaching, we did loads of Halloween activities last week. We learned a scary Halloween poem on Wednesday

Hallowe’en’s Coming

Hallowe’en’s coming,
Hallowe’en’s coming,
Skeletons will be after you.
Witches, cats
And big black bats,
Ghosts and goblins too!
Flap! Flap! Flap!
Go the big black bats.
Oo – Oo – Oo – Oo – Ooooooooh…….
Meow, meow meow
Say the ugly cats,
Oo – Oo – Oo – Oo – BOO!

On Friday we had our Halloween party, where we did lots of Halloween art, entered a Halloween art competition, had some Halloween treats and played some Halloween games. We had great fun trying to take a bite out of an apple hanging by a string from the ceiling without using our arms, and trying to pass an apple from under our chin to the next person in the line!

Here are some fun things to keep you busy over the mid term break, with Halloween recipes and some Halloween colouring pages. Also there are lots of fun maths games to play in our spare time!

Last week was Maths Week, so on Friday we went on a special Maths Trail around the school to see where we could see maths in our school and how often we use it every day. We had great fun and did some maths at the same time! We had 10 questions to find the answer to - how many would you have gotten?

1. What pattern is on the traffic lights?
2. What numbers are on the front of the school?
3. How many cars are in the car park?
4. How many benches are there beside the flower beds?
5. How many children can sit side by side on one bench?
6. How many pillars are there in the shelter?
7. What colours are the pillars?
8. What shape are the goalposts in the yard? Draw them.
9. Draw the shapes on the ground in the yard?
10. How many children lying down can fit on the bench in the shelter?

This week our school received our very first Green Flag! This was awarded by Green Schools in recognition of the work done to reduce litter and waste in our school. The flag was raised by Lord Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Cian O'Callaghan and can now be seen flying proudly in front of the school. Keep an eye out for the Fingal Independent and North County Leader newspapers next week and see if you can spot us! If you want to learn more about Green Schools visit http://www.greenschoolsireland.org/
Also on the Green Schools theme, congratulations to Louie who won a prize in the art competition in the school this week, based upon our idea of what is involved in a green school. Well done Louie!

This week (Oct 13th-21st) is Maths Week. We hope to try and discover maths in all areas of our lives next week, from the classroom to the home and everywhere in between. To learn more, or find out about fun events happening in Dublin, go to http://www.mathsweek.ie/2012.

Welcome to our class blog!

Last week our very own Emily Feeney was on "The cool school run" on 98FM. She told all of Dublin about her dog named Daisy and got a lift to school in the 98FM Thunders. Well done Emily!

We learned all about hedgehogs last week. Did you know that as well as having prickly spines, they can climb trees and swim too! They don't have great eyesight so they use their nose to find their way around and hunt for food. Check out this video to see one in action: http://vimeo.com/1878634
We also made our very own hedgehogs which turned out great!
