Electricity and obstacle courses

Hi everyone, This week we were looking at electricity, and we talked about where electricity comes from and all the different things that use electricity at school and at home. We were able to make our own electricity by rubbing a balloon on our hair and then sticking the balloon on the ceiling! This is called static electricity. We all got a balloon to take home and try it out. Hope you had fun trying it! Here's some games that you can play to learn more about electricity http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/using_electricity/eng/Introduction/whiteboard.htm On Friday we did some art that was a little bit different. We designed an obstacle course for a snail! An obstacle course is a path with objects in the way which you have to go around, through, over or under. Here are some pictures of our work Hope the snails enjoy it!

Science exhibition

We have been working away on some very exciting Science work over the last few weeks, and this all came together last Monday when the school put on a Science exhibition in the school hall. We tracked the weather and kept track of a hawthorn tree throughout the month of March as part of the Signs of Spring element of the project. As we saw last week, a pilot came to visit us to tell us all about what is involved in flying an airplane. Finally we did two experiments, one to identify different sounds and the other to see which type of bridge could hold the most weight. At the exhibition, we demonstrated these two experiments and our visitors took part too. Everyone agreed that the exhibition was a great success and hopefully we get to do more events like this in the school. It was all part of the Discover Primary Science award so we look forward to getting our certificate soon! On Friday we made salt dough butterflies and painted them in beautiful colours and patterns. Here are some of the results: If you'd like to try making your own salt dough at home, mix one cup of flour with half a cup of salt and some water until the dough is dry and not too sticky, cut out a shape, and put it in the microwave for 3 minutes. Hey presto!

A pilot comes to visit!

There was great excitement in the classroom this week when we had a visit from a pilot named Fiona, who flies for Aer Lingus. She told us all about what it was like to work as a pilot, how to fly an airplane and lots of other interesting things that we didn't know about working on airplane. She said steering an airplane was a bit like dancing, so Mr Kennedy reckoned there were a few people who would make good pilots in our class! She also said that if you work hard in school you could become a pilot, so make to sure to keep up the good work in school everyone.

Fiona telling us how important the seat belt is

A big thanks to Fiona for giving up her time to come in and see us.

We also made our very own airplanes in the classroom this week. Have fun making them fly at home!

Welcome back

Welcome back everyone!

Hope you all enjoyed the Christmas holidays and are excited to be back to school again.

Lots of exciting things happened us before Christmas:

Emily in first class won a prize in the Fingal County Council Green Schools colouring competition - well done Emily we are very proud of you!

The Christmas nativity play "Away in a manger" was a great success I think everyone will agree. Thanks to all the parents who helped out with lifts, costumes and gave us great support on the night.

Mr Kennedy also wants to say a huge THANK YOU for all the lovely presents he got from the boys and girls for Christmas.

We are back in school two weeks now and have been working hard since we came back. Last week we looked at a famous painting by the artist Andy Warhol, who painted the actress Marilyn Monroe. So we decided to paint our own! They came out great as you can see:

We have also done a lot of work on pets since we came back. We wrote about our favourite pets, and this week we paid a fantastic visit to Kinsealy Pet Store. We got to see loads of interesting and amazing animals, and we were lucky that we got to see a couple of the pets out of their cages! One of the pets even said "Hello" to us! Can you guess which one? Here are some of the pictures from our visit:

We decided to make our own fish tank when we got back to the classroom, and so we made some very colourful fish as a collage in our art lesson:

Here are some fun games to keep everyone busy during the week

See you all soon!

Beauty and the Beast

There was great excitement last Friday morning when we headed off on the bus with Miss Moriarty's and Miss Quaid's class to the Helix in DCU to see the panto "Beauty and the Beast". We had our lunches packed and got some treats as well so we were all set. We had great fun shouting out things like "Ah here, leave it ouhhhhhhh!" and "He's behind you!". But the highlight of the show (for Mr Kennedy anyway!) was when we all danced and sang along like crazy people to Gangnam Style, the roof on the Helix nearly came off we made so much noise! Here we are on the bus on the way in.

We are also getting ready for Christmas in our class these days, because Santa is coming in only 14 days! We made lovely Christmas stockings to hang up for Santa when he comes.

The Christmas nativity play is happening very soon, so we are practicing really hard every day, singing and saying our lines. Dont forget to keep practicing the songs at home so that we will sound great on the night! All the songs are up on our blog to sing along to.

Until next time......
